My ignorance of Kipling

I've been writing recently about racism in Kim. That's fine but I've touched on Kipling's views, and that's not fine.

The more I read about Kipling the more I realise how productive he was as a writer of all kinds, and that he did write in an imperial context and that he did have strongly held opinions about British India. I don't know what they are because I'm not read these essays. I've conflated his obvious affection for India in Kim with his wider beliefs, and that's a mistake. So I don't know what he believed. Reading Kim, I can't help liking the man but I'm going to stop make assumptions about his views. I'll focus on the text, unless I have a good reason to do otherwise.
